Diving watches intended for saturation diving should be fitted with a helium release valve. Helium atoms are the smallest natural gas particles found in nature, and are able to weasel their way inside the watch. If this causes an internal pressure build-up, as may happen if decompression stops are not long enough, the watch may be damaged and the crystal can even pop off.
